Thank you to all those volunteers that participated in our fundraising food booth at St. Pete's Pridefest on Saturday June 28th!We had a great day out at the fair and we were able to raise really important resources for the life-changing programs of the Uhuru Movement that are changing the conditions in the African community.
To illustrate just how critical these programs are, here is a picture of an African community march that took place at the same time we were doing our food booth yesterday. Family, friends, peers at Gibbs High, and other concerned community members marched for justice for 17 year old Javon Dawson who was shot in the back and killed by police as he attended a graduation party several weeks ago. The Uhuru Movement organized the Justice for Javon Dawson Committee to stop the public policy of heavy-handed policing of the African community and demand genuine economic development for the African community that can uplift the whole city. You can participate in this campaign by marching with the community on July 19th at 11am from the Uhuru House to City Hall - demanding justice! We would like to say a few things about our wonderful group of volunteers who kicked butt out in the hot sun last weekend at Pridefest!
* Joseph and Doug did a GREAT job on set up, putting up the banners and making the front of the booth look fantastic! Joseph was not even originally signed up to help out -- it was a wonderful surprise to have him on board. He also returned for breakdown and was a tremendous help cleaning up and loading the truck -- thanks Joseph!
* Julie rode her bike to join us bright and early for set up and did a fantastic job cooking the fries throughout the day, despite a testy fryer!
* Brina and Bianca - brand new volunteers who came all the way from Wesley Chapel and did a GREAT job on bun prep and assembling the sandwiches. They stuck it out with us through breakdown and until the very last dish was washed! We look forward to working with them again and others from their high school service club.
* Kitty, who also leads the Uhuru Foods work nationally, volunteered during the rush time on the front sales with Zoe -- they both did an excellent job of getting extra donations in and getting out information about the Uhuru Movement. They were continually ringing the donation bell and kept spirits high by calling for "Uhuru!"s from the crew for each donation!
* Raj came during our high selling time and stayed with us through the end as well - he worked the main grill with me and enticed the customers with yummy steak, sausages and onions cooking right in the front - it was a hot position and he did a great job!
* Also thanks to Sandy who staffed our political outreach table at the booth, handing out information about Javon Dawson campaign and the Uhuru Movement, signing up interested people and selling our Planet Uhuru t-shirts and bags!
A great day at Pridefest with the help of great volunteers! Join us for our upcoming fall fundraisers: Breakfast weekly at Saturday Morning Market and the Uhuru Holiday Pie Campaign. Uhuru Foods is run completely by volunteers - when you volunteer with Uhuru Foods you're expressing your solidarity with the right of African people to control over their own resources, land and lives.
Uhuru!
